Athletics are an extension of the classroom that are part of our district’s overall educational program and we have been excited to watch our student-athletes prepare for the fall season. Due to COVID-19, in-person attendance by spectators will be handled differently than prior seasons.
We encourage our families and community members to take advantage of the live streaming that will be provided for many of our home athletic events. The videos will be accessible through our new SYCSD Athletics YouTube account.
School districts in Adams County and York County collaboratively developed procedures that align with legislative mandates and the recommendations from both the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) and the York Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association (YAIAA).
The following guidelines will be implemented during the fall athletics season:
- Indoor events will be limited to 25 people. Girls volleyball is the only indoor competition that will be held in the fall. Due to the number of participants, coaches, referees, and event staff, the 25-person limit will be met WITHOUT the ability for spectators to attend. As such, neither home nor visiting spectators will be permitted.
- Outdoor events will be limited to 250 people. The Southern York County School District (SYCSD) will ensure that the number of participants, coaches, referees, game event staff, and spectators does not exceed the 250-person limit. This applies to events held within and outside of the gated fields and stadium. During varsity football games played at Susquehannock, the high school campus and its parking lots will be closed to the public.
- There will be a limited number of home-only spectators. Prior to athletic events at SYCSD, passes will be issued by the athletic department to student-athletes in each sport. The student-athletes will then distribute the passes to their parents/guardians that wish to attend. Attendees must present the passes to the event staff working the gate in order to gain admission. Parents/guardians should keep the passes for the duration of the fall 2020 season. Tickets will be distributed to student-athletes in the near future. In order to ensure SYCSD families can watch their children participate, visiting spectators will NOT be permitted during athletic events. Children must be accompanied by an adult in order to gain admission.
- Everyone attending a sporting event who is aged two years and older—including coaches, officials, student-athletes on the sidelines, event staff and spectators—must wear face coverings (masks or face shields). Attendance at any event is subject to appropriate behavior and adherence to our health and safety plans. Anyone who refuses to adhere to our guidelines will be asked to leave. Prior to attending a contest, please review our health and safety plans, which can be found on our school website.
For the safety of our students and community, we ask that all persons who visit the SYCSD campus respect and abide by all social distance guidelines. We appreciate your cooperation, and we look forward to a successful fall sports season!
