The SHS counselors will begin holding Freshman meetings in mid-November and continue through the month of December. Each ninth grade student will have the opportunity to meet with their counselor, talk about their transition to high school, and begin preliminary post-secondary planning. Ninth grade students should check their school email daily, as meeting dates and times will be communicated by their counselor in that way.

Counseling Office "Communication"
It has been brought to our attention that some parents/guardians believe that they are not receiving all of our communications. For those that are unaware, the SHS Counseling Office sends out a weekly “Next Week in the Counseling Office” blurb on Friday afternoons to make parents/guardians aware of goings on in our office that may impact their students. Additionally, we send out a monthly newsletter with information pertaining to upcoming events, college and career information, academic help, parent/guardian information and more. In the event that you are not receiving these communications please feel free to sign up for them using the link below.

Introducing Check and Connect
Check and Connect is a voluntary program that uses attendance, grade, and behavior data to look at a student’s ability to succeed in graduating high school. Informally, the Check and Connect program is designed to better the student’s success in school by helping them to improve their routines around the academic setting. By using weekly check-ins, the Check and Connect Mentor helps the student see their potential success if they apply themselves to their schooling. Often times, the Mentor can act as a counselor, tutor, and person who holds the student accountable for their actions.
Check and Connect is not just for students. The program Mentor works with teachers, administrators, and caregivers to find ways to help the student. It is a team effort to help the student succeed.
Teachers and Administrators look out for students they believe would be a good fit for the program, but there might also be concerns that they aren’t able to see. If you believe your student is not finding the motivation to come to school or stay in school, Check and Connect might be a way of helping them forward. Please contact your student’s counselor or an administrator if you would like to learn more about the program, or are interested in signing them up.

All exams are scheduled by the College Board. Please look over the exam dates carefully. Know that if you have planned family events interfering with the assigned test days and times (regular and late) you may have to forfeit the $40 non-refundable registration fee and not be able to take the AP exam in May. The College Board dictates these exam dates and times, and there are very few exceptions for alternate/late testing exam dates. Additionally, the 2023-2024 school year ends prior to completion of the late testing window. In the past, students have had to utilize the late testing window due to athletic competitions, sudden illness, or unexpected injury. If this happens this year, please know that late testing will take place May 22, 23, and 24. This could interfere with graduation practice, the graduation ceremony, and/or plans scheduled for after graduation. Below is a link displaying all the regularly scheduled exams and a link for the late testing window exams. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the AP exam schedule please don’t hesitate to contact me at kate.miklos@sycsd.org.

Canvas Parent App Instructions
Canvas is the Learning Management System that most SHS students will use to view and submit their classroom assignments for their in-person and digital days. All SHS students are assigned an account and parents are eligible to have an “observer” account which gives them access to view their student’s courses, assignments, due dates, etc. It is highly encouraged that parents set up this account. Additionally, this year the SHS Counseling Office also has a page on Canvas which parents can access through an observer account. For more information and instructions on how to create your observer account, please click here.
