Property Tax Rebate Program

  • The school district offers a property tax rebate program. If you are 65 or older, a widow or widower (50 or older), or permanently disabled, owning and occupying a home in the district, you could qualify. Eligibility is also based on income for the entire household. The 2023-24 application deadline for filing is May 15, 2024. Instructions for the application are available here.

Who can file for a Property Tax Rebate claim?

The Property Tax Rebate is based on the property taxes paid during the previous calendar year. To file for a Property Tax Rebate:

    1. You must have owned and occupied a home in the Southern York County School District during the entire period for which you are claiming the rebate; and

    2. You or your spouse must have been at least 65 years old as of December 31 of the claim year, or you were a widow or widower during all or part of the claim year and must have been 50 years or older as of December 31, or you were permanently disabled 18 years or older during all or part of the claim year.

Note: If you applied for Social Security Disability and were denied benefits, you are not eligible for a rebate as a disabled claimant; and

    1. Your total household income, including your spouse’s and any other household residents, must have been $35,000 or less. Remember to exclude one-half of your (1) Social Security benefits, (2) Supplemental Social Security Income, and (3) Tier 1 benefits from your Railroad Retirement when calculating your total household eligibility income.

    2. Owners must have paid taxes by December 31, 2023.

    3. Only one member of each household may file a claim, even if more than one person is qualified to receive a rebate.

Income Eligibility & What must be included in Household Income?

You must report the total household income you earned and/or received during 2023 for each category, which includes your spouse’s and/or any other income earned and/or received by other household residents while living with you. The income amount must have been $35,000 or less in 2023. You may exclude social security payments for your permanently disabled children (including adult children).
