Retired from Southern York County School District in 2007, Steger served 34 years as an elementary and high school music teacher along with band and choral director for the District. After his retirement, he continued to work as Assistant Band Director with the Susquehannock High School Marching Band until 2011. Since then, he continues to volunteer with the marching band each year.

The Alumni Association Steering Committee chose Steger for his years of dedication and volunteer work to the District.
