School Bus Red Light Safety Regulations

School Bus Traffic Safety

In our district, we take the safety of our students very seriously.  One question our community often asks is when does traffic need to stop for a school bus? Traffic should begin to prepare to stop when a school bus has activated its amber lights. All traffic, including vehicles at an intersection, must come to a complete stop at least 10 feet away from the bus when the bus activates its red lights and the stop arm has activated. Traffic should remain stopped until the red lights are no longer flashing. Running a bus's red lights is a very serious offense that may cause a 60-day license suspension, points, and fines.

Our dedicated school bus drivers assist students crossing the road by giving the thumbs-up sign when it is safe to cross. Please contact Rita Shields at rita.shields@sycsd.org or 717-235-4811 Ext. 7350 to report any school bus safety concerns.
