Counseling

  • Southern Middle School’s school counseling program is a part of the curriculum, consistent with the District’s concern for the growth and development of each pupil. Some activities are conducted by classroom teachers in cooperation with guidance counselors; others are conducted by counselors working with students or groups of students.

The middle school has two full-time, certified counselors on staff. Students are assigned to one of the counselors at the beginning of each year based on the alphabet, however the counselors work closely together. The counselors will meet with each student 3-4 times per year to review progress and discuss any concerns.

Students are free to make appointments by contacting their counselor before or after school or during a study period. The counselor will issue a signed guidance pass stating the appointment time. The student will present the pass to the teacher for approval.

When possible, all appointments will be made during an advisory period.  In cases of extreme emergency, or when no other time is available, will appointments be made during regularly scheduled class periods. Accordingly, teachers will not honor an appointment time unless the described procedure is followed.

Parents are always welcome to visit the school counselor to discuss their child’s scholastic progress, future educational or vocational plans, or any other problems or concerns. To avoid conflicts, parents should contact the guidance office or counselor for an appointment.
