2020-2021 Reopening Information

  • Dear Southern Community,

We hope this email finds you and your family well and enjoying the summer.  As we navigate this difficult situation, we continue our commitment to keep you informed of plans for the upcoming school year.  Recently, the Pennsylvania Department of Education shared new more restrictive guidelines for reopening schools with an emphasis on the need to maintain six or more feet of distancing.  Our schools do not have the space to have all students in the buildings at the same time and meet these guidelines. As we are educators, not medical professionals, our plans and choices are being made based upon the Public Health Guidance Regarding COVID-19 for Phased Reopening of Pre-K to 12 Schools from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Department of Education.

The Board at its meeting on July 23, voted on the District’s plan to reopen schools.  The approved plan is to implement a blended A/B schedule with one half of students in school at a time to start the school year.  We feel this schedule enables us to best adhere to the guidelines including the need for social distancing and be able to connect with our students for in-person learning.

Students will be assigned to a weekly A schedule or B schedule.  Our priority is to keep families on the same schedule. Students on the A schedule will have classes in their school buildings on Mondays and Tuesdays and have virtual learning on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays.  Students assigned to the B schedule will have in-person classes on Thursdays and Fridays and have virtual learning on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.  One priority we had in developing this schedule is that families be kept together by assigning siblings to the same schedule.  Due to the complexity of this schedule, we are unable to accommodate requests for an A or B schedule and we are not able to accept requests for schedule changes this year. In the upcoming weeks, you will be hearing from your building administrators regarding the specifics of the schedule and school day.  Our commitment is to continue to provide a quality learning experience for all students.

As the situation is changing on a daily basis, we are also prepared to move to total distance learning if students are not able to attend school for in-person learning.

For those families uncomfortable with in-person instruction for the start of the school year, there is also the option for full-time distance learning through our Southern York Digital Academy.  We are asking that families make the decision to send their children to the Digital Academy by the end of July.  Please click here for more information on Southern York Digital Academy.

The health and safety of our students and staff are paramount.  Per the order requiring universal face coverings, students and staff will be required to wear face coverings unless a medical exemption is completed by a physician.  We ask that this medical documentation be submitted as soon as possible, so the school team can work in partnership with families to develop accommodations within an approved health plan.

Our promise is to make the upcoming school year the best we possibly can for our students and our entire Warrior family, regardless of the model that is in place.  We will keep you informed with needed changes to existing plans as they occur.

I wish you happy and safe summer days!
