2016: John Berthold, '63

At SHS:  Class Valedictorian, National Honor Society, Class Officer, Calumet Staff, Concert Band, Marching Band, Dance Band, Orchestra, District and Regional Band on Trombone, and District Orchestra on String Bass

After SHS:  Graduated Gettysburg College in 1967, where he was a physics major; Master’s degree in 1974 and a doctorate in 1976 from the University of Arizona; Worked for National Security Agency research facilities at the University of Maryland and Fort Meade; Developed laser optic applications for nuclear and fossil-fired power plants for Babcock and Wilcox; Lead investigator on several U.S. government contracts, including NASA, Department of Defense, and Department of Energy; Serves as chief technology officer and a member of Davidson Instruments’ board of directors; Authored or co-authored more than 75 journal and conference publications; Listed as an inventor or co-inventor on 51 U.S. patents; 47 years in optics research, including extensive work in thin film coatings and fiber optic sensors, and recognized internationally as a pioneer and expert in the field.
