2023: Wayne McCullough

The Susquehannock High School Alumni Association awarded Dr. Wayne McCullough, a 1976 graduate of Susquehannock High School, the 2023 Susquehannock High School Distinguished Alumni Award.

Dr. McCullough has a long history of involvement in the Southern York County School District as a student, former school district official, and community leader. As a student at Susquehannock, he was a three-letter athlete (football, basketball, and baseball), a National Honor Society member, and a percussionist in the band and orchestra. 

After graduating from Elizabethtown College in 1980, Dr. McCullough worked as an Elizabethtown College administrative employee and assistant baseball coach and a Monmouth College Student Center Director and Associate Dean of Students before returning to Glen Rock to go into the construction business with his brother Kim McCullough, ‘75. After several years in contracting, he joined Southern York County School District staff where he worked as a Transportation Director and then Director of Operations prior to becoming Chief Financial and Operations Officer and Board Secretary. Dr. McCullough also served as a board director and president of the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials (PASBO), Executive Director of the Southern York County School District Foundation, and founding member of the Susquehannock High School Alumni Council. In 2013, he was named Pennsylvania’s Outstanding School Business Official.

After retiring from Southern York County School District in 2016, Dr. McCullough joined the PASBO staff as the Director of Leadership and Development and retired in 2022 as the organization’s Executive Director. He now works for his family businesses, Southern York Properties and Red Barn 216, co-hosts Go Long, a weekly faith-based sports radio show, with his wife Becki, and serves as a public school district consultant and Wilkes University adjunct professor. He continues to serve on the Southern York County School District Foundation, Susquehannock High School Alumni Association, and the Education Policy and Leadership Center’s Board of Directors. 

Locally, he has volunteered as a big brother, church council president, and adult Sunday School teacher and has coached multiple York County youth leagues and teams. During his years as Susquehannock’s head basketball coach, the team earned 12 sportsmanship awards and became a perennial playoff team.  He was twice named YAIAA coach of the year.
