Southern Middle School Students Advance to Regional Spelling Bee
Southern Middle School students recently participated in the written regional semifinal competition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Harrisburg, PA. Four of our 8th grade students qualified for the oral regional WITF Grand Championship Spelling Bee. This is quite an accomplishment considering they competed against more than 150 school champions from 10 surrounding counties!
Please congratulate Colin Baust-Crain, Colin Brusse, Bea Ricafort, and Matt O’Brien when you see them. They had to spell words such as ‘didgeridoo’ and ‘winklepicker’! They prepared by studying provided word lists and learning word origins.
Only 34 students are able to advance to the WITF Grand Championship which will take place on February 23, 2019 and will be televised on WITF-TV. We are Warrior Proud to have four SMS students in that group! “This is the third year in a row that we have had the largest number of students represented in the WITF Grand Championship Bee out of all the schools. I am very proud of these four students who continue to challenge themselves with difficult words,” said Southern Middle School teacher Kate Newland.
