Southern Elementary School Kicks Off One School One Book Program
Southern Elementary School recently launched their One School One Book program with the book “Because of Winn-Dixie”. Every student received his or her own copy of the book. The plot revolves around Opal, a lonely 10 year old, who has moved to Florida with her father, a preacher. Opal finds a big, funny stray dog in the Winn-Dixie grocery store and names him accordingly. Winn-Dixie helps Opal make friends with the local townspeople. She spends the summer collecting stories about her new friends.
The launch event featured a slide show of pet photos submitted by SES students and staff. Students were treated to a visit by Jill Platts, Coordinator of Social Services, and her dog Bodhi. Ms. Platts read the first chapter of the book aloud to kick off the event. SES has several activities planned around One School One Book. The event will end with a celebration during ShES Field Day in May.
