Southern Elementary School Holds Careers on Wheels Event

Michelle Brengle, Southern Elementary School counselor, organized a “Careers on Wheels” event for SES third and fourth graders.  The event featured over a dozen stations representing diverse career fields staffed by local businesses, giving students a broad sampling of jobs. Students listened to explanations of careers by local professionals and then asked questions before proceeding to the next station.

Stations included Rabbit Transit, New Freedom Fire Department, Fox 43, Southern Regional Police Department, York County Sheriff’s Department, Fed Ex, Miller Plumbing, Atlantic Lawn & Landscape, State Representative Kate Klunk, York County School of Technology CDL Division, York Excavating Company, York County Automotive, and Baltimore City SWAT Team.

This was the first year that Southern Elementary held “Careers on Wheels”.  Mrs. Brengle is hoping to expand the program next year.  “As a school counselor, it’s my responsibility to expose students to different types of careers.  With this event, I wanted to show students different careers that are tied to a vehicle and the options that exist,” said Mrs. Brengle. “The volunteers not only talked about what their career was all about, but they also pointed out how what students are doing now can affect their future, and how our PRIDE rules can follow them into the workforce,” she added.
