Southern Middle School Student Awarded Carson Scholarship

Tristan Rankin, an eighth grader at Southern Middle School, was recently named a Carson Scholar and awarded a college scholarship. The Carson Scholar Fund awards college scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities.

He said he is extremely proud to have been awarded the scholarship. When asked about others who have influenced him or served as role models, he spoke of a man he never got to meet, his grandfather. Tristan told us his grandfather worked with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America in New York and was someone who always gave back to the community. Through the stories he has heard, he bases his philosophy on life on the way his grandfather lived.

Tristan thinks about being a lawyer, a therapist, or entering a profession that will allow him to continue serving the community. This is not surprising considering he also started Coats of Friendship. After seeing a video of a boy on the streets of New York City with no coat to wear, he decided he wanted to collect coats for people in need in York County. Since 2019, Coats of Friendship has collected 15,100 coats for those in need.

Congratulations to Tristan on his scholarship and the success Coats of Friendship has seen. We know he will continue to do great things for the people in our community.
